Whilst hand-made gifts aren’t always useful, it’s a no-brainer that personalized and hand-made cards are much better than those one would pick up from the nearest shop to the “addressee’s” house, signing them on their knee outside the door and expecting them to be thrown away the next morning (which they usually do). Actually putting some time, effort and heart into someone’s card shows a much greater closeness than buying a mass-produced one, and although the first one may be rather simple, it has every chance of being received more warmly and being kept over the years. After all, the bottom of a drawer is a much warmer place to be than the bottom of a recycling bin.
Whereas adults might have too little time to spare for such an activity, children love any kind of paper craft, and card making is one of the most enjoyable variations. Kids’ card making magazines are full of stickers, colourful pictures to cut out and a multitude of brilliant and exciting ideas for every occasion: birthdays, anniversaries, Mother’s or Father’s Day, get-well-soon cards and so on. Periodicals of this genre created for adults are slightly different but every bit as fun and creative. Some include “ready to make” cards, the layouts being the work of commended card designers, and the complexity varies according to the event they are meant for, as well as the time one might have, thus some are easier and quicker to make than others.
When receiving a card, any innovation is truly a delight, as everyone is expecting to get a typical card with a typical message on it. You’ll learn all the tricks you’ll ever need in order to properly assort colours, place images on a sheet in a balanced and harmonious way and even give your cards original shapes, if you are fed up with the standardized rectangular shape and straight edges and corners.
It must be mentioned as well that many of these magazines come with some stimulating competitions, therefore giving you a shot at some desirable prizes, the specifications depending on the age group each magazine is designed for. It’s no lie that you can get individual card making kits in shops, but they offer a lot less flexibility and you can definitely save more money by subscribing to these publications.
Also, it’s no secret that what almost everybody appreciates in a card is a good sense of humour, and in these publications you can find a multitude of hilarious ideas, whatever the special occasion (if you’re a bit eccentric, there are ways you can adapt them in order to make them even funnier). It’s true that one must maintain that sense of humour within the limits of decency and good-taste, at least to make sure that it won’t be misinterpreted; you can be certain that these publications always offer an array of clever ideas, which will put the right kind of smile on someone’s face when opening their card.
